SEASON'S FIXTURES. September 17—"Wellington Trotting Club. Ootober 15. 19—Auckland Trotting Club. November 19. 23—Otahuha Trotting Club. November 8, 10. 11— N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club. December 3—Waikato Trotting Club. December 27, 29, 31—Auckland Trotting Club. February 18, 22—Otabubu Trotting Club. June 23, 27—Auckland Trotting Club. NOTES BY PICADOR. THE LATE ME. C. F. MARK. The announcement that the Auckland Trotting Club intends in some way to provide a lasting memorial to its former secretary, the late Mr. C. F. Mark, will be well received by sportsmen throughout the Dominion. It is fitting that the club should do this, as the deceased gentleman played a prominent part in guiding the destinies of the club during his 3G years as secretary, during which the club has become one of the leading trotting clubs of the Dominion. Moreover, he also did much to uplift the sport of trotting to its present high standard by his work on the New Zealand Trotting Conference and the New Zealand Trotting Association. What form the memorial will take has not yet been definitely decxded upon, but we may rest assured that tho committee of the Auckland Trotting Club will decide upon something fitting. The name of the late secretary will also be perpetuated on the programme, as provision has been made for a race to be known as the Mark Memorial. LIMITING MEMBERSHIP. With the growth of a place and the progress of sport, clubs as a rule seek to extend the list of members rather than to curtail in that direction. New South Wales, however, furnishes an illustration under the latter heading. In a recent issue of the Sydney Sportsman the following appeared:—"A meeting of members of the New South Wales Trotting Club has been called for an early date to alter the constitution of the club in regard to the maximum number of members. As at present constituted, the maximum number of members allowable is 200. The proposal to be put before the members is that it be reduced to 50. The present number of members is about 50, and it has never exceeded that number. A short time ago there were rumours that an attempt would be made to nominate sufficient members to swamp the voting power and compel the committee to do something with the vast amount of wealth it has hoarded. The tin hare has now come along to add to that wealth, and the committee evidently think ! the time has arrived to make a certainty j that no other hands shall spend the money that they have been a-Quarter of a century in hoarding up. NORTHLAND CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. | CAMPAIGN FOR, MEMBERSHIP. [EY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT- j WHANGAREI. Friday. The annual general meeting of the Northland Trotting Club was held this evening, Mr. L. J. Brake presiding. The annual report showed that tne attendance was in excess of last year. The gate receipts amounted to £284 lis 3d. as against £278 7s last year. The totalisator receipts amounted to £11,310, as against £11,781, a decrease of £471 10s. The club had a membership of 295 and a special appeal was to be made to increase this. The Northland Club was one of the three clubs mentioned by the president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference as being entitled to an extra'day's totalisator permit. There was a likelihood that Wanganui and Gisborne would relinquish their permits in the near future, in which case the club should be successful in obtaining an extra day's racing. _ _ Cups were presented by Messrs. J. R. McKenzie and G. McMillan, to whom the thanks of the club were due. After the close of the financial year the club received from the Government the sum of £147 5s 4d by way _of rebate on the totalisator turnover. This money was spent on improvements to the totalisator house. ' The following officers were electea:—Patrons, Mr. Coates and Messrs. Allen Bell and W. Jones, H.P.'s; president, Mr. L. J. Brake; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. W. Crawford and C. L. Grange; treasurer, Mr. A. F. Thomson; auditor, Mr. "W. A. Parker: committee, Messrs. W. A. Abbott, H. S. McKenzie. A. Clarke and A. J. Dawson. The chairman said December 10 had been granted as the club's next racing date. In answer to a question, the president said that tha "free-for-all" event was not a financial success, and there was little likelihood of this race being again included. NOTES FROM CANTERBURY. N.Z. CUP NOMINATIONS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ■ CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Nominations closed yesterday for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, and the response made by owners was as nearly ideal as possible. Personally I am among those who would have welcomed a tighter class, cutting down the number of horses eligible on the front mark. When that result could not be secured, it was satisfactory to find the nomination restricted to 22 horses. There were others eligible, but presence would have been no real strength. Those nominated are all live candidates, able to survive a preparation and go to the post. It is to be hoped there will be some withdrawals, as 22 starters would be too many, but it is pleasing at this stage to have a list which is not loaded up with negligible nominations. _ The following is a list of the nominations for the cup:—Great Bingen, Great Hope, Ahuriri, Talaro, Sheik, Prince Pointer, Man-o'-War, Acron, Imprint, Kohara, Sea Pearl, Audacious, Waitaki Girl, Logan Chief, Peter Bingen, Black Admiral, Jack Potts. Cardinal Logan,. Locanda Mac, Loganwood t Queea'i Own. Escapade. The New' Brighton Trotting Club is erecting 18 new horse stalls along the south side of the club's grounds, adjoining the present boxes. There are now a large number of horses trained on the track, and it has been realised for some time past that mcro stalls were required. Guy Parrish will do no more racing tms season, as he has to be got ready for stud duties. J. N. Clarke has in hand s brother to the pacers Rebel and Riot. He looks a likely sort of pacer and moves in good style in his work. The owner of Loßanwocd is .working away with the filly by Author Dillon from Loganwood's dam, and the young pacer is doing well in her work at New Brighton. Talent, who raced very consistently at tee Autrust Meeting. is havinp a short spell. In a few weeks' time he will be brought in and prepared for the Cup Meeting. G. S. Smith has a very promising trotter by Lee Norris from the trotter Maori Princess. After being broken in srd educated the young horse was turned out. He was worked very liehtly as a three-vear-old, and a start has just been made with him for the current season's racing. unfortunately. when worked this week at New Brighton, he was very "lame, which came as a surprise to his owner-trainer, who stated that the young trotter was_ all right when coin? to the track. It _is to be hoped the trouble is nothing serious, as be promises to race well this season. SIRES OF THE SEASON. Two very fine horses in the shape of "-he Triumph ajid Worthy Bond, owned by Mr. B. Edwards, are again this season at the service of breeders at the Mardella Stud. Otahuhu. The Triumph, who has a record of Q.Bi, is by The Exponent, of tie most noteworthy descendants of the celebrated Bin<ren. and it can be said he 13 endowed with all the physique that flight be expected from such a line. Worthy Bond (2.114) is by Axworthy, one of the most noted sires in the United States, whose array of winning descendants bulks largely.
