Benanee, Romantic, Clannda, a\st numbering 59, compared with 50 last year, this must be considered a very satisfactory response, especially when it is realised that all the best horses are.engaged. It is an entry to which all parts of the Dominion have contributed, there being 30 horses from the North Island and 29 from the South. . , ttj.v. The Northern contingent includes Eden Hall. Nippy, Desert Glow, and Pkaola, from Auckland, also Te Monanui, Lady Desmond. Yoma, Euphonium and Romantic, from Taranaki. Most of these would have been missing had the Auckland meeting been in progress at the same time. Uf the South Island team sixteen are from the Riccarton stables, while nine hail from Wingatui. From a quality point of view it is a good list, with Rapine, Star Stranger, Count Cavour, Footfall, Piuthair, Te Monanui, Grand Knight, Centrepiece and Degage. The handicapper will thus have a really good lot of horses to place at the top of the field. AGRION'S PREPARATION. DERBY COLT'S LIGHT WORK. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, Aug. 19. As a result of one of Agrion's heels giving trouble the New Zealand colt is only doing light work on the tan track. Trainer Mason 13 having a special shoe made for Agrion, which it is hoped will prevent fur- ■ her" trouble. NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. Ihere was very little o£ interest in th 6 work at Ellersue yesterday. As no grass track was available, the horses were nearly all restricted to pacing on the sand, and among those to accomplish useiul tasne were the Jelhcoe Handicap candidates Te Kara and Llandudno, who arrived lrom Te Awamutu on 'X'nursday. The pair look well and have evidently been kept moving since they raced in June. The hunters Hypothesis (Mr. Baker} and Nukupere (W. Renniej were sent over tour hurdles and went satislactonly, althougn iSuKupere jumped rather high. Town Had (R. E. Thomson; was sent over the same fences and made a good showing, fencing quickly. Welkne will not be a runner in the Auckland Handicap to-day. Atter sprinting a few days ago he was a' littie sore and did not appear quite himsell. It is thought that he may nave given himself a slight rick and iie has been p.aced on the easy list. It is stated that the hunter Nukupere has been in work a short period and may not be seasoned enough to snow up at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, where he is booked to have his hist race. £»ukupere is a nve-year-old gelding by Quin Abbey irom Glenopai, a mare tnat was once a uselui perfoizner in K. Hannon's colours, and he is bred well enough to make good later on. The condition of Town Hall suggests that he has had a sound preparation, as he is bright and muscular. When schooled over hurdles at Elierslie yesterday he put plenty of dash into his and made a very respectable showing. Town Hail lacks experience oi racing over hurdles, but he seems a likely one to make good in hunters' events. That hardy gelding Day Guard, who had a strenuous time last season, has arrived at Eiiersiie with a view to keeping his engagement in the Dunedin Handicap. He nas evidently had a let-up since he raced last, lor he is very bright ond carrying a good deal of condition. A race or two should help to bring him forward in his preparation for the spring campaign. Day Guard promises to do well again this season. It i 3 understood that Delightment will forego his engagement, in the Jellicoe Handicap and be reserved for the Dunedin Handicap. Few horses can handle heavy going better than Deiightment and he is in great heart, so that he is bound to have a solid following to-day. He has a substantial weight but his latest form has been good. The Te Aroha-trained horses King Lu and Queen Arch have not come under notice on the tracks at Ellerslie this week, as they did not arrive until yesterday evening. On Trentham form the pair should have good prospects to-day, especially King Lu, who is a fine sprinter in heavy ground. HORSES FOR AUSTRALIA. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Friday. Piuthair and Clarinda were embarked on the Maheno this morning. Mr. T. Lloyd, who is taking the two mares to Sydney, is very pleased with their condition. He said they had both done really well at Woodville before leaving for Wellington. R. E. Manson, who is to do the riding, also went by the same steamer. Mr. R. A. McKenzie, the horses' owner, leaves for Sydney on September 2. All being well Piuthair and Clarinda will make their first appearance at Sydney Tattersall's Meeting at Randwick, on September 10.
