OVERCOAT THEFT CHARGE.

ACCUSED'S GOOD RECORD. MAGISTRATE'S LENIENT VIEW. [BY TELEGSAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] eHEISTCHUBCH, Friday Charged with "the theft of an overcoat, the property of John Kendrick Archer, Mayor of Christchurch, Albert Cox, who yesterday told a grandiloquent story of varied adventures, appeared on remand in the Magistrate's Conrt to-day, before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M. The magistrate said he had had the opportunity of perusing certain documents which he obtained from the Navy League office. He fcund that accused's service record dated back to 1881, and his record while in the Royal Navy "was a good one. Accused's service in the Great War had been quite satisfactory and he was inclined to give him another chance. Continuing, the magistrate said: "Drink and probably something else seems to be your trouble. I think you should take out a prohibition order." Cox: I will do that, sir. The Magistrate: On signing a prohibition order, the case against you will be dismissed.
