KOWHAI HIGH SCHOOL.

IMPROVEMENTS TO GROUNDS. A meeting of the Kowhai Junior High School Committee was presided over by the chairman, Mr. A. A. Buckley. Reporting on the committee's request for the fencing of the sections fronting Onslow Road, acquired some time ago, the Education Board advised that the department had suggested the committee should approach the parents and householders of the district with a view to raising a sum sufficient to cover the cost of fencing. The committee considered .that in view of the fact that it already had the matter of improvement of the school grounds in hand, and the parents had already contributed largely to that fund, it would hardly be fair to expect them to fence the grounds as well. It was decided to reply to the department on those lines. Reporting on the grounds improvement scheme, the chairman said that between £2O and £25 had already been raised by various functions, the parents having entered whole-heartedly into the scheme. One of the masters, Mr. Slavin, had had squads of boys at work, and to such good purpose that two large areas, which were sown in grass, were now fit for mowing. The lower' portion, fronting Kowhai Street, already bore a different aspect, due to the efforts of the boys. The Education Board notified the appointment. of Mr,. L. E. Rhodes as its representative, ill place of Mr. IT. Allport. resigned. The chairman reported the continued illness of the principal of Ul9 school, Mr. R. E. Rudman, and expressed the hone of the committee that he would shortly be restored to health.
