NOTES FROM THAMES.

SUCCESS OF JUBILEE. SERVICE CAR LICENCES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES. Friday. The Thames Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. W. Bongard, presided. The Peace Memorial Executive Committee forwarded its thanks >for the temporary lighting of the memorial column during the recent jubilee celebrations. It was hoped that the effect of the lighting would act as an incentive to the public to light the monument permanently » The Finance Committee reported that £2012 had been advanced for sewerage installations. Reference was made to the amending legislation designed .to overcome the existing legal obligation on service car proprietors to take out licences in every local district through which their cars operate, as foreshadowed by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. K. S. Williams, this week, in connection with a decision by the Thames County Council to compel taxi drivers who were resident in Thames to take out a licence with the County Council. The Mayor said it w.as quite obvious that the Motor Vehicles Act was never intended to apply in this manner, or as conveyed by the decision of the Jjull Court in supporting the decision of the Magistrate at Stratford. The Mayor said he was sure that, in view of the expressed hope of the Minister of Public Works that local bodies would not take advantage of the powers disclosed by the judgment of the magistrate, the Thames County Council would reconsider its decision. , , t It was decided to adopt the Minister s suggestion as far as the borough of Thames was concerned.
