BRIDGING THE WAIOEKA

NEW CONCRETE STRUCTURE. COMPLETION IN SIGHT. OPENING NEXT OCTOBER. [BY TIUEGKAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI. Friday. The new concrete bridge over the Waioeka River is rapidly approaching completion, and now presents a handsome appearance, in striking contrast to the old wooden structure alongside, which it is now replacing. The first pile was driven on July 1, 1926. Difficulties then cropped up, the contractor, Mr. S. E. Brookes, having to put down much longer piles than was considered necessary by the engineers, owing to the fact that a solid bottom could not be found at the anticipated depth. However, this trouble was soon overcome, and the work has gone on with wonderful success ever since. The contract time allowed was two years, which will not be up until March next, but early in September will now see the bridge completed.

The whole of the material is on the ground, all shingle has been delivered, arid the greater part of the approach fillings has been put in. Next week, a start will be made to remove buildings, in order to be able to complete the approaches. The last of the decking has been laid, and is being closely followed up by the balustrading, etc. The wrought iron railing between the carriage and footway is now being erected. Most of the lamp standards are on the site, and will with'.n the next fortnight. Nearly all the heavy gear used in the work of construction has been finished with, and is ready to be transported elsewhere. A start has been made with the demolition of temporary structures, such as the shingle gantry and buildings. The staff, which at the maximum has been about 40, is now being gradually decreased. It is expected that the bridge will be officially opened by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. K. S. Williams, some time in October.
