MONEY FOR APPARATUS.

THE TECHNICAL COLLEGE. LOCAL BODY AID SOUGHT. Letters from ten local bodies, refusing —for a variety of reasons—to make donations toward the cost of apparatus for the Seddon Memorial Technical College, were received at a meeting of the board yesterday. Tho chairman, Mr. H. S. W. King, remarked that he thought many of the local bodies were under the impression that they could only make grants for educational purposes out of unauthorised expenditure, whereas they were empowered to do so out of general funds. Mr. W. N. Mcintosh said he thought the local bodies were not interested in education. The chairman said the Auckland City Council m->de what amounted to a donation of £7OO a year by allowing the board the use of the college site at a peppercorn rental. The board had repeatedly been refused a grant by the department toward the cost of the apparatus., Apparently the department considered the board should be able to provide apparatus out of its grant for incidental expenditure, but it had not been able to do so. It was decided to renew the application for assistance from the local bodies.
