TRAMWAYS LOAN POLL.

\ CHECKING OF THE VOTES. ADVERSE MAJORITY INCREASED. The votes cast in the tramways loan poll were checked yesterday, the only material alteration being that at the Epsom tram depot the actual voting was 88 for and 105 against. These figures were reversed, giving a majority at the booth in favour of the proposal, when the figures were transmitted to the Town Hall by telephone immediately after the conclusion of polling. The corrected final results, with the provisional figures in parentheses, are as follows:—For, 3427 (3443); against, 4308 (4276); informal, 44 (65); majority against, 881 (833). DISMISSAL OF WORKMEN. REINSTATEMENT UNLIKELY. The effect of the rejection of the tramways loan on the number of men employed by the tramways department was explained by Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Tramways Committee of the City Council, yesterday. Reductions in the maintenance staff had taken place in the past fortnight, owing to the depletion of the available funds. The services of 69 track repairers had been dispensed with since the beginning of the month, and 39 more men were given one week's notice on Monday. A considerable amount of maintenance work had been undertaken ahead of schedule to keep men employed during the winter months. Had the loan* been carried, it was hoped to re-employ a considerable number of the men dismissed.
