THEFT FROM HOUSE

MARRIED WOMAN'S OFFENCE. PROBATION FOR TWO YEARS. A charge of breaking and entering the dwelling of Alice Annie Mansfield, in Massey Road, Manurewa, and stealing £l4 10s and two gold tie-pins-, a gold locket and a razor, valued at £l9, was preferred against Mary Coesford Bloomfield, aged 22 (Mr. A. Moody) in the Police Court yesterday. Mr. Moody suggested that, in view of the circumstances, the charge should be reduced to one of common theft. Chief-Detective Ward said accused was married about 18 months ago, and was subject to epileptic fits. On the evening of August 12 she went into the house of a next-door neighbour and committed the theft. She disputed taking the whole of the money, and only £4 had been recovered. The articles of jewellery had not been recovered. The magistrate, Mr. Hunt, said it would be only a waste of public money to send accused to the Supreme Court when she could be dealt with equally well in the lower Court. The charge was then reduced to one of theft, and accused elected to be dealt: with summarily. She was placed on probation for two years and ordered to make restitution of £ls. A request for the, suppression of the woman's name was refused.
