OBITUARY.

MR. G. NEVILL. The death occurred on Wednesday of Mr. G. Nevill, of Takapuna, at the age of 74 Born in Gloucestershire, Mr. Nevill arrived in Wellington by the Wennington Wayne. He was surveying in the Wairarapa district for some time and was later employed as messenger in Parlia-. ment House. He was a member of the party of volunteers who marched on Parihaka in 1831. when two Maori murderers were captured Mr. Nevill was one of the pioneers of the Wellington City Salvation Army Corps and was also connected with army work in Palmerston North. Coming North in ISI4, he settled in Whangarei until 1920, when he went to live at Devonport and later at Takapuna. Mr. Neville leaves widow, three sons, Messrs. G. Nevill, Wadestown, W. Nevill, Nortbcote. and R. Nevill, Takapuna, and two daughters, Mrs. J. Wood, Vogeltown, Wellington, and,- C. Parkes, Wnangarei. MRS. ADAH HUME. The death took place at Remuera* on Wednesday of Mrs. Adah Hume, aged 79, widow of Mr. James Hume, for many years manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Hamilton. Mrs. Hume was born in Cornwall, England, and arrived at Auckland with' her father, the late Mr. John Martyn, m 1833. She lived at Ramarama. then known as Helland, until her marriage to Mr. Hume in 1869. Mr. Hume was at that time manager of th? Ngaruawahia branch of the bank, moving to Hamilton in 1878. There are seven sons. Jlr. H. M. Hume and Mr. A. M. Hume, of Auckland,.Mr. J. M. Hume, of Wellington, Mr. J. H. H. Hume, Mr. W. H. Hume and Mr. C. M. Hume, of Hamilton, and Mr. K. G. Hume, sub-in-spector of the Bank of New Zealand, and one daughter, Mrs. R Atkinson Abbott, of Remuera. Another daughter, Mrs. Clement Dixon, died in South Africa some years*ago. MR. JOHN MAKER. Mr. John Maher, who for 30 years was a well-known farmer in the Southland district, died at Pokeno on Wednesday at the age of 73. Mr. Maher was born at Freshford, Ireland, and shortly after arriving at Lyttelton in 1379 joined the police department, having charge of the Rangiora district. . He left the force in 1883, after his marriage to Miss Mary Anne Bourke, of Rangiora, and engaged in farming at Wendonside, Southland. His farm was 10 miles from the nearest railway station and, with neighbouring settlers, he formed a railway league which for many years agitated for a line to serve the district. The railway was established in 1913, and in recognition of Mr. Maher's services one of the stations was named after his birthplace. He was chairman of the local School Committee, and also held office in all the sports bodies in the district. In 1913 Mr. Maher sold his | farm and went to Ireland, returning to the Dominion three years ago. , While in Ireland he was elected vice-president of the All Ireland Farmers' Union, and was secretary to the Freshford branch. With Sir John Keane he visited -the United States for the purpose of reporting on meat-packing. Mr. Maher was a noted authority on cheese and established the first dairy factory at Waikaia after the formation of the railway. After his return from Ireland he lived with his sons on a farm at Pokeno. He is survived by his wife and the following children:—Mr. C. 'G. Maher, of Auckland, Mr. T. F. Maher, and Mr. K.- V. Maher, of Ireland, Mr. J. A. Maher, of Hastings, Mr. M. W. Maher and Mr. L. Maher. of Pokeno; Mr. P. K. Maher and Miss G. Maher, who are due to arrive in New Zealand from Ireland shortly, and Miss M. Maher and Miss V. Maher, of Pokeno. There are six grandchildren. MR. C. L. WIGGINS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PEESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. The death is reported of Mr. Clement J.ester Wiggins, who was born in England in 1543. and was an assistant master at Cb- st's College in 1896. The late Mr. Wiggins was subsequently headmaster of the Dunedin Preparatory School.
