TRADES UNIONISM.

PENDULUM SWUNG TOO FAR. STATEMENT BY MR. BRUCE. Addressing the Women's Electoral League at Brisbane lately, the Australian Prime Minister, Mr. Bruce, attributed the success of the last Imperial Conference to the manifestation of tho personal touch. This force, he said, would also lead to a solution of Australia's other problems, such as the problem of markets, drift of population to the cities, and ill relations between capital and labour. Trades unionism, Mr Bruce added, was a good thing in itself, but the pendulum had swung too far, and the* system had turned itself into something that was trying to usurp the powers of Government and was checking tho progress of industry. Here again co-operation and personal touch could bring about better conditions, and he believed that the spirit was more abroad to-day than ever it had been in the past.
