Wednesday The annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors was opened at Napier this morning, Mr. F. J. Ledger (Nelson), presiding. The Mayor of Napier, Mr. J. Vigor Brown, welcomed delegates from all parts of New Zealand. The annual report reviewed the ac-tivities-of the institute during the past year, and disclosed a slight increase in membership, which now stands at 321. Discussing the report, the president expressed the opinion that the time had arrived when the qualifications of cadets, and the training they undergo, should be raised in standard. He said he thought that m future a university training and degree would be necessary for those who wished to progress in the profession. Other delegates supported Mr. Ledger's views in this connection. The president also referred to the institute's dissatisfaction with the reception of a number of applicants for registration by the-Engineers' Registration Board, and suggested that the* only course now open was to petition Parliament, The election of officers resulted President, Mr. Preston Chambers (Aul-kland); council, Messrs. A. F. Waters (Wellington), A. H. Bogle (Wanganui), and H. L. Paterson (Dunedinl; auditor, Mr. W. SWheeler.
