ROADING FOR SETTLERS
REQUEST FROM TOREHAPE. APPLICATION FOR SUBSIDY. fBY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. THAMES. Wednesday. •We have been in the mud all our lives and want to get out of it. We read that the Government is out to help the settlers of the back blocks, and here is its chance," said Mr E. Harris, when concluding the request of a deputation of Torehape settlers to the Hauraki Plains County Council for assistance in metalling miles of road from Mahuta Road to the southern end of Ngatea riding. Mr. Harm said the work was most urgently required. A public meeting had decided to include 24 settlers in a rating* area to finance the scheme. Large sup plies of metal were accumulating rapidly in the drains and would be easily avail able for the work. The county clerk, Mr. E. Mahoney, said the proposed rating area was valued at £22,750 On the motion of the chairman, Mr. E. L. Walton, it was decided to apply for a £2 for £1 subsidy for the work, and the engineer was deputed to discuss details with the settlers and the Land Drainage Department, with a view to securing the metal from the Torehape roadside.
