J COUNTY COMPETITIONS. FIGHT FOR CHAMPIONSHIP. (Received August- 17. 11.55 p.m.) -A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, Aug. 16. The chief interest in the county cricket matches, most oi which were considerably interfered with by ram, was centied in " the meeting oi Notts and Lancashire. This match had an important bearing on the championship. If Notts had won * outright it would have been almost level l ' with Lancashire for the first place, a " result which Lancashire was determined " to prevent. Notts in the first innings made {Whysall 119, Gunn 51, Larwood 64, Barratt 57; McDonald five wickets for 119). Lancashire in the first innings made. 148 (Watson 66; S.Staples six for 33). and - in the second 76 for two wickets. Notts '-won or. the first innings. The Lancashire players stonewalled at the end, and Hollows took 125 minutes to score seven - rons. , Rain began to fall at 3 p.m., and no 1 further play was possible. Somersetshire in the first innings made 104 {Kennedy six for 37, Newman four for 61), and' in the second 155 for one ■wicket. {Young 90 not out). Somersetshire won hv nine wickets. Foe Warwickshire aeainst Sussex Kdner made 1?0 and Parsons 141. The match was drawn.
