LONDON UNDER REPAIR.

WIDENING IN STRAND. PICCADILLY BEING RELAID. (British Official Wireless.) A. and N.Z. RUGBY, Aug. 16. Several important, improvements to various roads are in progress in London under the direction of the Ministry of Transport; Buildings which projected into the Strand and formed an awkward bottleneck, about midway down the famous thoroughfare, have been demolished. When the work has been completed it will give the Strand a uniform breadth and will greatly facilitate traffic. The whole of Piccadilly which runs westward from Piccadilly Circus is being relaid, and new water, gas and electricity mains will be installed. Workmen are engaged night and day in an endeavour to complete the task before the holiday season, which invariably lightens the volume of traffic in August, is over. Progress has h'therto been rapid and the contractors are reported to be in advance of their scheduled time. The second section which will be begun to-morrow necessitates the complete rerouting of westward traffic. In order to facilitate the movement of traffic King George has for the first time given permission for buses and heavy traffic to use the Mall, which leads from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace. The speed of cars is restricted in the Mall, which was not. constructed to carry such traffic. Work was also begun 'to-day on the new bridge across the Thames which will replace the old Lambeth footbridge. It is estimated' that it will take four years to complete this bridge and the cost will be about £1.000,000.
