OTOROHANGA NEWS.

STEPS TO IMPROVE ROADS. SPECIAL RATING [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OTOROHANGA. Wednesday The Otorohanga County Council met yesterday, Mr. F. Potts presiding. A deputation consisting of Messrs R. H. Cowern, E. H. Oudaille and F. E. Hyde waited on the council asking that a part of their district should be formed into a special rating area in order that a better road might be made. The council decided to form the area and eventually metal the road as far as the Waimahora Junction.

A deputation of Puketarata Road settlers asked for the formation of a special rating area to enable them to metal their road, but the council decided to take no action

The chairman was appointed to represent the council at the native lands conference at Te Kuiti on August 25. It was decided to strike a rate of 1 5-8 d in the £ over the Ngutanui special rating area for the purpose of securing the loan for the metalling of a section between Kawa and Kawhia. The council decided to support the Auckland Provincial Executive in asking the Government to gradually reduce protective customs taxation now levied on British goods. The Chief Postmaster, Hamilton, wrote stating that the contractor for the mail service between Te Awamutu was experiencing great difficulty in maintaining the service, and asking that fascining be carried out on the worst places. The county clerk had replied at length pointing out that the road was to bo metalled next summer and the following year, but that it would be waste of money to do extensive repairs in its present state. A man would be kept at work on this section of the road for the next month. The road was all right for horse-drawn vehicles, but was not suitable for heavy motor traffic in its present condition.
