UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.

WORKS AT DEVONPORT. "This is an opportunity to get a subsidy for very urgent work which otherwise we could not finance," said (he Mayor of Devonport, Mr. E. Aldridge, at a meeting of the Borough Council last evening, when .a letter from the Labour Department intimated that tho Government was prepared to givo a subsidy to local bodies for works created for the relief oj unemployment. The Mayor said works that could be undertaken were improvements to Stanley Bay Park, the Vauxhall Reserve, O'Neill's Point Cemetery, and . the stone facing of the waterfront wall. As far as tho cemetery was concerned, they were now asking for subscriptions for the work of cleaning it", and every £ given would be worth £2.with a Government subsidy. It. was decided that details'of the work to ho done should be prepared by the engineer and a Government 'subsidy will be applied for.
