FINE SWIMMING BATHS.
ST. CUTHBERT'S COLLEGE. WORK ALMOST COMPLETED. New swimming baths, equipped on thoroughly up-to-date lines and involving an expenditure of about £6OOO, will be available for -the use of pupils of St. Cuthbert's Cirls' College in about six weeks. The construction of the baths on such a pretentious scale has been made possible through the generosity of Miss Runciman and her niece, shareholders in the college, who donated a sum of £6OOO for the purpose at a time when the directors were considering a much more modest scheme, involving the expenditure of about £2OOO, The length of the baths is 65ft., and the depth of water will vary from 3ft. to 9ft. The baths will be conducted along the system termed by Americans "swimming in drinking water." A plant will be installed for filtering, aerating, chlorinating and heating the water, and the baths will be emptied daily. Provision will also be made for an electrical system of cleaning tho bottom and sides of the baths. Adequate dressing-room accommodation has been provided, and there will be the usual showers. Very good progress has been made with the building, which was commenced in May. and the concrete work has now been completed. The baths are situated on fhe freehold portion of the college grounds, facing Wapiti Avenue. Swimming is to be made a definite part of the college curriculum. There is nnv a roll of 430 girls, including 122 boarders. .......
