MOTORING ACCIDENTS.

COLLISION ON LAKE ROAD. OCCUPANTS ESCAPE INJURY. BOTH CARS SUSTAIN DAMAGE. A remarkable escape from injury was experienced by the occupants of two motor-cars which collided close to the brickworks in Lake Road, Devonport, at about 5.40 p.m. on Saturday. t A five-seater car driven by Dr. C. M. Bout, of Devonport, was proceeding down the hill, while the other, a two-seater car, driven by Mr. H. T. Whitten, who had with him as passengers his son, aged 14, and Mr. J. Mowbray, of Tin Road, Takapuna, was travelling in the opposite direction. The lighter car was almost completely wrecked by the impact, and the occupants were thrown on to the roadway. They escaped without injury, although Mr. Mowbray was unconscious when picked up. He soon regained consciousness and was taken home suffering slightly from shock. The damage to both cars was considerable, and both had to be towed into Devonport. The lighter car suffered much more severely than the other, the body and chassis being badly shattered. On Dr. Rout's car the front buffer was torn off, a solid metal right front wheel was badly buckled, the front axle bent, the windscreen shattered and other damage done.

CAR STRIKES TRAM POLE. VEHICLE BADLY DAMAGED. A severe collision occurred in Beach Road, near Anzac Avenue, at about midnight on Saturday, when a motor-car containing five people struck a tramway centre pole. The car was proceeding from the city and keavy rain at the time greatly affected the visibility. The driver, Mr. T. S. Miller, of Argyle Street, Heme Bay, was severely bruised. Miss N. Coutts, of Helensville, sustained a fracture of the left hand and was cut by flying glass from the windscreen. Misses I. and N. Miller and Mr. N. C. Stockley suffered from abrasions and shock. After treatment at the casualty ward of the Auckland Hospital, all were able to proceed home. * The car was extensively damaged.' The front portion was twisted and the engine was forced nnder the footboard.

FATALITY AT WELLIFGTOF. MAN DIES IN HOSPITAL. [bt telegraph.—press association.] WELLINGTON. Sunday. When walking across the road near the Courtenay Place morgue last night Walter Valentine Key, a single man, aged 37, was knocked over by a motor-car. As a result of running into a stationary motor-lorry owned by Mr. A. Ruff, of Nukuhou North, in the Waimana Gorge yesterday, a car owned by Mr. C. Garlick, of Taneatua, was wrecked. Fortunately there were no casualties.
