KAWARAU RIVER CLAIMS.

WATER SLOWLY RECEDING. LITTLE WORK BEING DONE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUXEDIN, Wednesday. Following the severe frost on June 21conditions until the end of last week were not so severe and with a daily thaw the Kawavau River at Cromwell remained about 6in. higher than the lowest level reached on June 21. In the last two days the frosts have been mors severe, and with an absence of thaw the water is again receding slowly. However, the level is still slightly above the lowest point touched a week ago. The work being done on the river is, still only in a few isolated plices. Most of the claiinliolders are waiting for the lower level which was confidently expected, but which has not yet been reached. No reports are to hand from companies on the upper reaches of the river. A representative meeting of Cromvve,li claimholders was held on Monday evening to discuss several matters, among which was a call by the parent company. The reasons for the call were embodied in a letter to the local company and the amount of the call, together with arrears on previous calls, was' stated' to be necessary to meet outstanding liabilities. The meeting decided to resist payment of the call pending certain important information from the company on financial matters.
