The motion for the second reading of the Flag Bill was carried in the Senate to-day. In Iho committee stage, however, an amendment was adopted to make a new design. Under this amendment the Union Jack and the two former Republican flags will ibe given one quarter each, and the remaining . quarter will be occupied by fo;ir stars on an azure field, representing the four provinces in the Union. The Union Jack will occupy the top quarter next to the staff. The Government's design had the same arrangement on a small shield in the centre of the old Holland flag. The Government is in a minority in the Senate. Tito Prime Minister, General Hertzog, resisted the new design. He said the Union Jack had a position of dominance arid the Dutch would never accept it. •• The bill as amended will now be raferred back to the House of Assembly.
