WORK FOR APPRENTICES.
A BUILDER WHO RETIRED. TECHNICAL BREACHES OF ACT. Thirteen pi-osecutions for failing to find new employment for his apprentices on giving up business wefe brought against H. C. Nichols (Mr, McLiver) in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr. W. Slaughter, registrar of apprentices, said defendant had been in the building trade, but owing to ill-health •was forced to give np business some tima last year. He endeavoured to transfer his 13 apprentices, but found it difficult, and the matter was reported to the department. It had since been learned that five of the apprentices had since been placed in employment, but defendant had failed to notify the department. Five other apprentices had later obtained positions, leaving three, one of whom did not wish to continue in the trade. The remaining two had been found positions by the department, but were not apprenticed. It was recognised that defendant was placed in an unfortunate position, and the breach was only a technical, one. The magistrate, Sir. Cutten, dismissed the first five informations, and imposed fines of 2s 6d in each of the remaining eight cases.
