STRANDED STEAMERS.
TASMAN IN SAFE POSiTIGM. RIVERINA'S MAILS RECOVERED. (Received May 2, 11.25 p.m.) A. nnd N.Z. - SYDNEY, May 2. The Royal Packet Navigation Company's steamer Tasman, which went aground on an extension of Clarke Island, Torres Straits, was still on the reef this afternoon, but was reported to be in no danger. A tug has been despatched from Brisbane and a steamer from Batavia to the assistance of the Tasman. There are 26 passengers and a crew of 100 men aboard. The vessel is resting on to soft coral bed. It is reported that the unattended light on Clarke Island had been extinguished for more than a week and warnings (o shipping had been issued by the Queensland Navigation Department. The steamer Koutman. of the same line as the Tasman. made an effbrt to assist the stranded steamer, but the depth of tho water was not sufficient to enable lier to go close enough to put hawsers aboard tho Tasman All the mails on board the stranded Huddart-Parker steamer Riverina on Gobo Island have bean recovered.
