COMING RADIO CONFERENCE. GATHERING AT WASHINGTON. DELEGATE FROM NEW ZEALAND. [BY TELEGRAPH.. OWN CORRESPONDENT. | WELLINGTON. Saturday. The Postmaster-General, Hon. W. Nosworthy, announces that the Government' has decided that Mr. A. Gibbs, chief telegraph engineer of the Post- and Telegraph Department, will pay an extended visit of investigation to Europe and North America. He will leave Wellington by the Tainui next Wednesday for England. While abroad Mr. Gibbs will represent New Zealand at the International Radio Telegraph Conference to be held at Washington in October next. The conference will co-ordinate all matters relating to the wireless telegraph and telephone services and agree upon all necessary alterations to the international convention regulations which at present govern communication by means of wireless on land and seai. Wavelengths suitable to all the different services, including broadcasting and amateur transmission, will be allocated with a view to minimising interference and to providing the greatest possible number of channels of communication for the different countries of the world. During recent years rapid developments have taken place in many aspect!} of telegraph and telephone engineering, notably in the design and application of automatic telephony, machine printing telegraphy, and the application of radio frequency both in the form known as "wireless telegraphy " and " telephony." Such developments as broadcasting and international communication by long and short waves have, in particular, made great progress during the last few years. A close study will be made of all, these developments and their relation to the ultimate expansion of the New Zealand telegraph and telephone services. Tiie economic aspect of the department's! telegraph and telephone extension and maintenance vorks will also be considered. Mr. * Gibbs will spend a portion of his time in the United Kingdom in collaboration with the engineers of the British Post Office and the manufacturers of New 2ieaiand telegraph and telephone equipment.
