BRITISH BY-ELECTION.
AUTHOR ENTERS PARLIAMENT SCOTTISH UNIVERSITIES SEAT. (Received May 1, 6.57 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun, LONDON, April SO. The by-election for one of tha three Scottish Universities' seats rendered vacant by the death of Sir Henry Craik, resulted:— Mr. ,John Buchan (Conservative) 16,963 Mr. Hugh Guthrie (Labour) . . 2,378 Mr. Guthrie loses his deposit. At the last general election the polling for the three Scottish Universities seats was as follows:—Sir Henry Craik (Conservative), 7189 j Mr, D. M. Cowan (Liberal), 5010; Sir George Berry (Conservative), 3781; Rev. J. M. Munro (Labour), 1639. The first three named were elected. Mr. John Buchan was born in Peeblesshire in 1875. He was educated at Glasgow and Oxford Universities, where he had a distinguished career. In 1901-03 he was private secretary to the late Lord Milner, who was High Commissioner to South Africa. During the war be was on the Headquarters Staff. Mr. Buchan is well known tj thousands of readers through his exciting novels, " The Thirtynine Steps," *' Greenmantle," " Mr. Standfast," " The Dancing Floor," and other stories. He has also written many excellent literary studies and goneral works, and hi? History of the Great War is one of the best small historii® of that event. He was for many yeais adviser to the publishing firm of Thoni is Nelson and Sons, of which firm he is a member.
