LOCAL BODY PROBLEMS.
DESIRABILITY OF SELF-HELP.
OPINION OF prime; minister. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON. Friday. That local problems should be handled by local bodies without Government intervention was the opinion expressed by the Prime Minister to a deputation 'of Wairau settlers who waited upon him with a request that a Royal Commission be set up to inquire into matters connected with the flooding of the Wairau River. The deputation complained that farming was impossible owing to the prevalence of floods and stated that the River board neglected their particular area. Mr. Coates said the weakness of the representations was that the Government was asked to do the work. If the Government, in the interest of the State, were asked to contribute to solving a local problem it could do so, but it was desirable that local people should act themselves.
