GREAT BARRIER REEF.
PROBLEM OF FORMATION. SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION. (Received April 8. 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. April 8. Mr. F. A. Potts, who is lecturer in zoology at Cambridge University, is endeavouring to form an expedition of scientists, for the purpose of closer study of the biological reasons for the ebullition of life which caused the Great Barrier Reef to be formed. Mr. Potts hopes to go to Australia at the end of June. His companions will follow a fortnight later. The personnel of the expedition is not decided as yet, but Mr. Potts hopes to have all the foremost men, though there may be some difficulty in their obtaining leave. The plans provide for headquarters at Cairns, with a camp on a nearby island. They will charter a 40-ton motor-boat, capable of carrying trawls and nets. The expedition wilh have the advice and help of Dr. 11. C. Richards, Professor of Geology at Brisbane University, and will be helped by the practical experience of Mr. Potts, who was a member of the Murray Island expedition in 1913. The committee is headed by Sir Matthew Nathan, a former Governor of Queensland, who is assisting in the organisation of the expedition.
