" Query," Newmarket.—Spanner ran third in the Easter Handicap of 1919. At Trentham he started favourite in the Thompson Handicap and finished second to Sasanof. " Wager."—Depredation figured eleventh in order on tiio totalisator when he won the Auckland Cup. Prince Merriwee started the absolute outsider of the field for the race in Question. NOTES BY PHAETON. A.R.C. EASTER HANDICAP. With 24 horses accepted for in connection with' the Easter Handicap, everything may be said to augur well for the big mile race of the autumn season furnishing © conteit in every way worths of Ellerslie. Reremoana. who was awarded the nost of honpur with 10.2, ha« had his engagement continued, arid the faot of the son of Hallowmas having led the field home in the two preceding years and that he retains his brilliancy, will be sure to keep him among the favourite division. Mr. A. B. Williams has a double string to his bow with Rapine (9.7) and Joy King (7.12). Rapine's prowos3 is well lecoenised. but it is a popular opinion that if the Hawke's Bay sportsman is to furnish the winner of the race under review it will be with Joy King. Royal Divorce (8.4) has been paid up for. and he will only have to reproduce his best form to take ,a hand in the settlement of matters when the race up the straight comes to be undertaken next Saturday. THREE-YEAR-OLD DIVISION. With four three-year-olds figuring among the acceptances for the approaching Easter Handicap it may not prove uninteresting to note the successes registered in the past in the mile race at Ellersiie by that division. Twenty-seven years back Advance carried 9.6 to victory, and at an interval of a year Nonette. under 9.11. led the field home. In 1906. Mobility, who was put in at the minimum (6.7). beat her field. Gold Crest scored under 9.0 in 190 S. and in the year following Aborigine (7.13), got home first. Then, at an interval of a year, Antoinette (7.10) won: six years later Menelaus (7.9) scored, and in 1922 Grotesque (8.1) registered a win. Eight, successes are therefore down to the credit of the three-yar-olds, and "can a three-year-old win again this year" is a Question that will exercise many minds between now and next Saturday when the mile race will come up for decision. The three-yearr olds engaged are Joy King (7.12). Magna Charta (7.11), High Pitch (7.4) and Papatu (7.0). High Pitch is the one popularly selected to increase the three-year-old record, and quite a number of good jufiges are found on his side. LIMERICK AND WINDBAG. With Limerick and Windbag likely to measure strides to-day in the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm, it may be regarded as quite certain that wide interest will be centred in the result. The race is to be run over a mile and a-quarter at weight-for-age, with a scale of penalties. Inclusive of penalties respectively incurred Windbag will carry 9.9 and Limerick 8.10. A GREAT TWO-YEAR-OLD. Royal Feast has displayed such marked brilliancy in his galioplng that he is well in the limelight. In a reference to the champion two-year-old of the present season in Australia " Pilot," of the Sydney Referee, remarks:—"lt would be difficult to recall any other first-class two-year-oid as tall and big as Royal Feast. When he appeared at Randwick recently his size surprised those who had not previously seen him. It is early yet to talk of Derby prospects, but, though he has proved a great finisher in all his races and seems certain to go through as the best of the two-year-olds, Royal Fea3t is not a colt that appeals as likely to make a great stayer. Sylvanite was a big Derby winner, and other big have stayed, but if Royal Feast continues to grow there will be almost too much of him for a distance horsa." MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. Advices to hand state that Mr. A. B. Williams will have four horses to carry his colours at the forthcoming meeting at Ellerslie, the quartette including Rapine, Star Stranger, Joy King, and Decoy Bird. A recent photograph of Limerick published in Australia shows the New Zealand gelding to be a very different-looking horse to what he was last spring, and this takes the form of presenting him in quite an attractive light. Hynanna has been allowed to drop out of the Easter Handicap, but as he figures among the acceptances for the President's Handicap, and has been left in the Great Northern St. Leger that- points to his being produced at Ellerslie, The Waikato Racing Club has received a capital list of entries for the approaching autumn meeting at Te Rapa, and matters may be said to share most promisingly for a record gathering. The weights for the first day's events ate to be declared on April 25. The Sires' Produce Stakes, decided annually at the Australian Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, 3 has left backers of the favourite lamenting their losses under conditions that could be termed exasperating, for during the last three contests they lost their money without gating a run. Heroic, at even money, stopped at the post in 1924, Manfred (6 to 4) did likewise in 1925. and last year those backers who thought they •were finding money when they accepted 5 to 4 about Rampion had a similar experience.

Possibly no great amount of merit attached to Royal Divorce's dead-heat with Standard in the Flying Handicap at the Mastorton meeting:, but still he was conceding his rival 181b. However, the pleasing fact about Royal Divorce's performance at Opaki is that it serves to endorse the view that he is coming on well and that, if he stands a preparation, he may reward Mr. E. Riddiford with a good win before the season closes. When Merry Damon led tho field borne in the Stewards' Handicap at the Masterton meeting last Thursday he interrupted a eenes of 17 defeats registered against his xiaine ciace he scored a victory in the King George- Handicap at Elierelie last June, and it can therefore be said his win at *- 1 wa c 8 ,J vel * overdue. NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.

GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. A change of stable may often, mean a change of luck to a horae and it proved the case with Merry Damon, who was successful in the Stewards' Handicap at Masterton on Thursday. Until a little over a month;ago Merry Damon was trained at Ellerslie by J. Buchanan, but he was then placed under the care of R. Hatch at Awapuni, and in winning at his first start for the latter trainer he broke a lengthy sequence of failures. It was his first success since last June, and, now that he is in winning vein again, more victories may quickly follow. Many Auckland sportsmen were fully prepared for Merry Damon's win, as he had been giving indications before leaving Ellerslie of returning to his best. His new trainer should find him a good proposition, especially where the fields are small.

The Auckland light-weight H. Wiggins, who commands quite a lot of riding in the southern provinces of the North Island, would no doubt find his trip to Masterton this week a profitable one. He was successful 011 Raukura and Henna at the southern centre on Thursday and brought his tally of winning mounts for the current season up to 33.

The successful light-weight T. Green had to forego a number of riding engagements lately owing to a slight indisposition, and he was riding for the first time for several weeks when he steered Merry Damon and Vertigern to victory at Masterton on Thursday. It is unusual for an apprentice to top the list of winning jockeys for a season, but Green is in the premier position at the present stage of the current season with 45 wins, and he appears very likely to attain that honour.

The country-trained hurdler Peter Rosa, whose latest exploits have shown him to be at the top of his form, is reported to be training on well, and he is expected to take his place 111 the field for the Brighton Hurdles nest Saturday. In consequence of his recent good form Peter Rosa is well up in the weights and he may find horses like Archibald, Wedding March, and Kawini very difficult to beat on the terms he is row meeting them. Still he has only 3lb more than he won with at Te Aroha. and he should run a good race next Saturday, although Ellerslie has not been a lucky course for him.

Tho two-year-old filly by Quin Abbey'from Lady Winsome that was purchased cheaply at the Trentham sales in Jan lary bv N Cunningham has done well and carries an improved appearance. She belongs to a family that lias given us a number of good winners, and next season she may prove a bargain at the price at which her purchase was effected. >

Automne looks none the worse for his recent racing and P. Conway is keeping him going steadily with a view to coming engagements. The Autumn gelding has raced respectably in his Jatest starts and there is hope that he will yet return to winning form, even if he fails to fulfil the high promise he gave as a two-year-old. when he was unbeaten in his three public appearances, winning the Avondale Stakes, the Nursery Handicap at Avondale, and the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie.

The unsettled weather has interfered with training operations at Ellerslie this week and there has not been anything of special interest in the track doings during the past few days. There will probably be a change this morning, for the tracks dried a good deal yesterday and trainers will be quick to take advantage of the improved conditions. The fact that a number of horses are to be schooled over the steeplechase course this morning if the weather keeps fine should add considerably to the interest of the proceedings.

The hunter Bahadur has been working soundly and has a bright appearance. This gelding should be a better horse this jump ing season than he has hitherto been, but he will want more work and racing to bring him to his best. It is six months since he had a race and lack of recent racing may tell against him in his coming engagements.

Nothing very strenuous has been exacted from Alonsoa this week, but she has been executing serviceable tasks. This mare is bright and muscular after her racing on the country circuit, where she displayed improved form and a partiality for soft going. Alonsoa should earn more money in the hack class before the close of the season.

After his unsuccessful trip to Tauranga Passionate was given a short let-up, but he is once again among the active brigade at Ellerslie. J. Anderton intends to »give the chestnut gelding a course of schooling with a view to racing him in jumping events this winter. Passionate has previously had a little experience at hurdling and he is one that may prove useful in this department when he is properly schooled.

The yearling colt by Valkyrian from Informative that is being trained at Ellerslie by J. Williamson has been named King Val. The youngster will be raced in partnership by his trainer and Mr. J. D. Jones.

Records in the Stud Book are confined to special, well-defined limits, but what highly-interesting incidents could be related in regard to the rmrchase of brood mares bought for comparatively small sums and the remarkable circumstances under which their purchase was brought about! The story of how the Knowsley mare Mersey became the property of tho Auckland Stud Company is worth relating even at this distant date, for had it not been for a chance visit to Auckland on September 7, 1880, by Sir Hercules Robinson, who wns summoned to England and which brought, about his retirement from the post of Governor of Now Zealand, the purchase of mares in England for an Auckland body would probably not have been undertaken, at least in the year named. While awaiting the departure of the steamer Ilotomahana, by which ho was proceeding to Sydney en route to England, Sir Hercules Robinson went out , to Glen Orchard, Kohimarama, where the Auckland Stud Company carried on operations in those days, and in the courso of conversation there with the directors the projected sale of the Middle Park Stud in England was mentioned. Sir Hercules offered to select some mares for the company, and the kindly overture was at once accepted. At the sale held at the English estate on December 10, 1880, ho bought half-a-dozen mares, included among which was Mersey, who was secured for 150gns. No one requires to be told that Mersey won undying fame as the dam of Carbine, and frorp the chance circumstances which arose in making the purchase for the Auckland Stud Company it will readily be recognised that the opportunity to secure the wonderful, mare might easily have been missed, and in that case there would not have been the mating which gave the turf a wonderful racehorse and who also has his name enrolled as the sire of Derby winners in both hemispheres. Mersey was foaled in 1874, so that she was 11 years old when she produced Carbine.

ANOTHER PRIZE. Mersey was inot the only prize Sir Hercules Robinson secured for Auckland in England in the winter of 1880. The Thormanby mare Atlantis, with a colt foal at foot by Doncaster, figured as one of the lots. The colt that followed Atlantis into the sale-rinc in England is identical with •St. Leger, who won marked fame as a sire in New Zealand. Atlantis produced eight foals at Svlvia Park, included among which was Muskotoon, Fabulous, and Leolantis, who all proved successful sires, while her daughters, Happy Land and Sybil, also can tributed to the Stud Book. Happy Land was the dam of Hova, who had a fine dash of brilliancy and who went very close to winning a Melbourne Cup when he ran Attraria to a short neck for first honours in the race of 1895. A RECENT PURCHASE. The stallion Cockpit, purchased in England recently on account of Mr. W. .T. Donovan, is bred as follows: Sire: China Cock, by Santoi (son of Queen's Birthday and grandson of Hagioscope). Dam: Sanford. by Santry (son of Grallinule and grandson of Isonomy). This brings a new strain of blood to the Dominion, and it will be interesting to note the result. Santoi, grandson of Cockpit, was a true stayer, the Ascot Gold Cup being included in the races ho won. CRANKY STALLIONS. Writing on the above subject in the Sydney Sportsman A. B. Patterson penned the following:—" With the increase of temperament in horses, due possibly to inbreeding, the problem of keeping stallions civil grows in importance each year. Once a horse is allowed to get the upper hand there is no knowing where he will stop Many methods of persuasion have been tried, from the handle of a pitchfork to a 1 cutting whip, but men of long experience have come to the conclusion that it is not much use trying to master a stallion by hurting him—you must frighten him. The late Isaac Earnshaw, who in his time handled every sort of horse, including some very , bad-tempered animals, was a firm believer in the fright cure. ' It's no use beating a horse about the body or about the rump, he said ' You have to damage them too mtich before you can cow -them but if you frighten them you get results without damaging them at all And when it comes to frightening them there is only one safe way to go to work. You must fin them about the head. It sounds like murder, but if you get a foot of hose pipe, with u chain in it, and give them a couple of good, smart clouts across the face with it. it does not hurt them at all, but it frightens all the fight out of them Tliev will kick at a whip and they will roar with rage when anyone gets to (hem with a pitchfork, but the hose pipe and chain just demoralises them. - I've seen plentv of stallions that would charge their own groom out of the yard when they felt in an ugly mood, but I never saw one that would try it a second time after he was met with a good clout of the hose pipe across the face. They have to be taught to behave themselves, and that is the nest way that 1 know of to do it-. 1 " MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. . In a chapter on noteworthy dams of winners in England a writer in the Sports man sa t vs: —"The dam of the triplo crown hero Isinglass, Deadlock (by Wenlock—Malpractice), never raced and was not very highly thought of by her breeder. She was bred by Lord Alington and passed into the hands of Captain Machell (who bred from her) and back again to the -ownership of Lord Alington. Subsequently Captain Machell was looking over Lord Alington's brood mares at Crichel. and when Deadlock was inspected Lord Alington pronounced her to be the worst of the lot and said anybody might take her for £2O. Captain Machell at once paid the money and had ,iv sovereign returned ' for luck.' He subsequently sold the mare to M*.' H McCalmont for fiOOgns. In 1890 Deadlock threw a colt to Isonomv, who, under the name of Isinglass, won the triple crown and with Btake-money to the amount of £57,143 to hip credit " It has always been a puzzle to me (is&ys an English writer) why such a hit was made with Sundridge. . Why was he bred from, as he was meTely -a handicap sprinter? The answer would fill a column, but. in short, is " Speed." As a trainer said to me recently: " You say we should breed for stamina, but what does it matter to me whether they stay five furlongs or fivo miles, so long as they get past the post first."
