COMBATING BLACKBERRY.
WORK OF DR. TiLLYARD.
[by telegraph.—own correspondent. "WELLINGTON. Friday.
The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has received a letter from a prominent Hawke's Bay farmer saying that every assistance will be given to Dr. R. J. Tillyard in his efforts to find a practical remedy for the blackberry pest.
"It is impossible to estimate the annual loss in production due to this weed." says the writer. "I have spent thousands of pounds on a 2000-acre place near Wairoa and have tried every possible means. There is no practical method of eradicating blackberry on broken ground. I consider all other perils, as far as production is concerned, insignificant compared with blackberry." Extensive investigations are being conducted into the blackberry problem by Dr. Tillyard. and every care will be taken to see that the insects the use of which are contemplated do not affect other economic plants. It is nr£ anticipated that definite results will be obtained until the lapse of about a year. The investigations are beinp carried on from grants provided by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
