The export of fruit from Auckland to the English and South American markets will be at its height next month, when Auckland growers will make arrangements for shipping many thousand of cases of apples from local orchards. The steamer Pakeha is expected to arrive at Auckland in about a week, and she will load between §OOO and (5000 cases of apples before leaving on March 9 for Wellington. The chief varieties will be Cos's Orange Pippin, Munroes, Jonathan and the last of the Willie Sharp. Later in the season pears from the Auckland district will be exported, but the nine ships leaving Wellington in April will carry pears only from the Hawke's Bay and Nelson provinces. At present the apples due for export are being " pre-cooled " in Auckland This entails placing the fruit in a cooling chamber with a temperature between 32deg. and 34c!eg. F It is expected another boat will load fruit at Auckland at the end of March, although definite ar rangements have not yet been made. The steamers sailing from Wellington during April will be the Tamaroa, Pinko, Hororata, Delphic, Argyllshire, Hertford, Port Caroline and Mahia. The Maimoa will leave Wellington on March 26. PRICE OF FLOUR. REDUCTION IN AUCKLAND. The reduction of £1 a ton in the price of flour is not confined to Southern brands, for the Auckland mills have advised a similar reduction. Chilled Beef.—There was a curtailment of supplies this week owing to several carrying steamers being fog-bound. Large supplies will be landed next week. RISE IN SHIPPING FREIGHTS. EFFECT OF THE COAL STRIKE. An important result of the coal strike in Britain lajst year was the demand for tonnage for the importation of coal. Many ships went out in ballast and, in addition to other cargo, returned with foreign coal, which in the aggregate cost £37,000,000, Though this movement of coal was uneconomic, it created a scarcity of tonnage "Lloyd's List," in a simple form, has shown the effect of this disorganisation of shipping oft its index number of freights by tramp vessels 1924. 1025. 1926.
