TRADE WITH AMERICA.

POSITION OF NEW ZEALAND. ROOM FOR DEVELOPMENT. VALUE OF A COMMISSIONER. The opinion that New Zealand's export trade to the United States could be largely increased by greater understanding between the two countries was expressed yesterday by Mr. E. G. Pauly, United States trade commissioner for Australia and New Zealand, who was a through passenger to Sydney by the Niagara. Mr. Pauly agreed that New Zealand could not continue to buy indiscriminately from the United States, and, as the Minister of Lands hud stated. " not send her a halfpenny stamp in return." The erection of tariS walls would not assist, for he had proved that American articles sold almost as freely when placed under heavy duties. The American manufacturer was determined to find a market for his goods, and he was able to climb tariff walls with them if the consumer in any country showed that he wanted to buy. The " ißuy British Goods " slogan was all right as far as it went, said Mr. Pauly, but there was always the question whether commercial isolation was economically sound, and he ventured to say it was not. Since he, had taken up office in Melbourne three years ago the volume of trade between Australia and the United States had shown a considerable increase. It had been impossible to devote much attention to New Zealand, but it was probable that a trade commissioner would be, appointed to the Dominion in the near future, and it was likely he would bo stationed at Auckland. The time was now ripe for the appointment of a New Zealand trade commissioner to the United States, Mr. Pauly said, as there was no reason why the Dominion's huge sdverse balance should not be reduced. The United States at present produced vast supplies of primary products, but he thought that in years to come she would look more and more to Australia and New Zealand for these necessities. Even at present there was a large seasonal market to be catered for, and a New Zealand commissioner would be invaluable in promoting trade. SOUTH -AUSTRALIAN LOAN.
