Charged with stealing £8 from the ferryman at Kopu, an assisted immigrant,' who had been working on a farm on the Hauraki Plains, was found guilty in the Police Court at Paeroa to-day. Accused followed the method commonly known as "ringing the changes," although in this case it was tried by means of a cheque. He handed a cheque for £8 to the ferryman who, in tendering change, apparently also handed the cheque back to the accused. The latter again cashed the cheque at Thames, thus receiving £l6 for a cheque worth £B. A year's probation was granted accused, who was ordered to make restitution of the amount stolen. The Court directed that his name be suppressed.
