WAIKATO EAST TOURNEY. 'A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. The Waikato East Tennis Association's championship and handicap tournament, held at Tirau last week, was a great success. There was a total of 115 entries for the nino events and a large number of spectators were present. The play of the ex-New Zealand champion. Dr. J. G. Laurenson, was a great attraction. In the final of the ladies' singles championship Miss N. Beverley defeated Miss J. Andrews after a very good exhibition of tennis. She also won the ladies' handicap singles against Mrs. Litchfield. The following championship finals will be played o2 at Mtitamata:—Men'3 singles: Dr. Laurenson v. A. C. Thompson. Men's doubles: Dr. Laurenson and H. McDonald v. R. D. Ward and E. Green. The Taumarunui Tennis Club held an open handicap tournament on Anniversary Day and the _ competitors included players from Te Kuiti, Ongarue and Ohura. The ladies' singles was won by Mrs. Bate who defeated Mrs. W. Iv. Williams (Ohura) in the final. The ladies' doubles was won by Misses E. Carlson and M. .Donnelly who defeated Mrs. Turnbull and Mrs. Bate in the final. The men's doubles is unfinished and the final will 'be between Thomas and Holford (Taumarunui) and McDonald and Steedman (Te Kuiti). The men's singles reached the eemi-final stage. Thomas (Taumarunui), C. Steedman (Te Kuiti). C. B. Lockyer (Ongarue), and S. V. Fernandez (Ohura) being the four players left. PLAY AT TAURANGA. [BY TELEGB.ABH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA, Monday. A tennis tournament was played on the Domain courts at Tauranga on Saturday between the Rotorua and Tatiranga clubs. Tauranga won by 21 matches to 9. two matches being incomplete. Tennis matches were played at Matata on Saturday between Tauranga South and Matata. The latter team won by 19 games to three.
