A youth, Samuel Gatfield Marshall, agod 17, was charged in the Magistrate's Court to-day that he unlawfully and without colour of right, but not so as to be. guilty, of theft, converted to his use a. motor-car valued at £3OO, the property of Dr. Patrick Mackin. Sub-Inspector Harvey stated that Mar* shall was engaged by Dr. Mackin as chauffeur, and only commenced his duties yesterday morning. Ho took the car out aud drove to the Hutt with four companions last evening. He was arrested at Petone in charge of the car. Tho father of tho accused said his son had become a little out of hand, but ho asked that he be admitted to probation. "The misappropriation of motor-cars is a serious matter," said the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Salmon, to accused, "and you are liable to a sentence of three months" imprisonment. As you are only 17£ years of age, and appear to have got into bad* company, I shall adopt your father's suggestion and admit you to probation for 12 months, on condition that you make good tho damage done fo tthe car, and also on condition that you keep clear of these la*, rikin friends of yours.
