INTOXICATED MOTORIAT
COLLISION AT ONEHUNGA. A FINE OF £lO IMPOSED, ACCUSED'S NAME SUPPRESSED, Admitting that he was intoxicated whea in charge of a motor-car in Queen Street Onehunga, on January 22, a resident of that suburb was fined £lO in the Ohe-' hunga Police Court yesterday. Messrs. J. E. Cowell, H. J. Da vies and I. Lomas, J.P.'s, who presided, ordered the suppression of his name. The circumstances, as explained by Sergeant J. A. Cruickshank, were thai on the evening of January 22 defendant turned from Trafalgar Street into Queen Street, and driving on the wrong side collided with a motor-lorry. The driver of the lorry immediately reported the matter to the police, to whom the defendant, who was placed in custody, admitted he was intoxicated. No evidence was called,, but Mr. Moody, who represented defendant, said the man's insobriety was due. not so much to the quantity, as to the quality of the liquor ho had consumed. His client had had no lunch, but took four drinks, and the result was perhaps to be expected. The accident had arisen through the defendant attempting to avoid an obstruction n?ar a petrol pump, and this move had brought him into collision with the lorry. Mr. Moody suggested that the Bench should follow a precedent set by Mr. Watson, S.M., at Palniorston North, and either convict and discharge accused, or order him to come up for sentence when called upon. The man w?s 60 years of age, controlled a large business,, and had never previously been before the Court. After a short retirement, the Bench imposed a fine of £lO.
