PICTURES FOR AUSTRALIA.

BETTER SELECTION URGED. QUALITY OF MODERN ART. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 7 p.m.) LONDON. Dee. 14. An influential meeting of Australian artists at Chelsea, Mr. George Coates presiding, discussed the purposes of the Felton art bequest. It was • resolved to suggest to the trustees that before considering the purchase of mediocre examples of old masters a much larger sum should be annually devoted to the acquisition of works of contemporary artists, without regard to nationality. . It was pointed out by several speakers that the policy of the trustees should be to give greater attention to modem art, in which Australian artists, students and the public were moie interested, than to third-rate old masters. It was stated that there was a tendency on the part of British picture dealers to regard the bequest as a suitable outlet for pictures which were not quite good enough for wfialthy American purchasers.
