DISHONEST EMPLOYEES, MILKMAN AND BREAD-CARTER. ONE SENTENCED TO GAOL. The conversion to his use of £2B 19s 2d, collected on behalf of Amburys, Ltd., was admitted by Lvndsay Gordon Keane i»» the Police Court yesterday. ,Chief-Detective Cununings said accused was employed by Ambtirys, Ltd., at New-' ton, between August 16 and December 7, and between October 4 and December 3 collected from 54 customers sums rangingfrom Is 9d to £2 10s sd, the total amount haipg £2B 19s 2d. He converted all th« money to his use. Accused was married, with two sons, aged two and four. It was stated the offences were committed while he was suffering; from domestic worries, and that owing to this he had taken to drinking heavily. Me rendered the police every assistance in the invests gation. j The Rev. Jasper Calder said it was true that domestic worries did have an effect / on accused's weakness for drink, but happily they were now removed. He suggested that a lengthy and strict term o£ probation would meet the. catse, and also. that accused should be ordered to tako out a prohibition order. The' magistrate, Mr. Hunt, placed Keane on probation for two years, and ordered him to make restitution of the money obtained, and to take out a prohibition order. " The probation officer's report of your character is very unfavourable," said the magistrate, when William Murphy, aged 28, appeared for sentence ou 4S charges of failing to account for money totalling £SB 8a 6Ad, collected for Walter Buchanan, Ltd. It was stated accused was employed as a bread carter, at a salary of £4 a week, with free bread. Ho disappeared, but was arrested in Wellington om November 30. " The probation officer states you have been leading an immoral life," the majiis- v trate said, "and he considers 'probation would ho useless for you. i r ou will bo sentenced to ono months' imprisonment, and, in addition, ordered to make restitution." Theft of jewellery valued at £3O, the property of Charles Chilcott, was admitted by Victor William Oldberg, aged 29. "Accused recoivecl the jewellery on approval, and then sold it," said ChiefDetective Curamings. "Ho lias done this sort* of thing before."' The magistrate granted a remand until Monday to enable T the chief detective and tho probation oUlcer to furnish a report on accused's character.
