GRAINTg FROM DEPARTMENT. FUNDS VERY LIMITED. The Auckland Education .Boand met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. A. Burns, presiding. : Suggested arrangements lor tlw visit of country school children to Auckland, Hamilton and Rotoroa in connection With the tour of the Duke and Duchess ,of York were made in a letter from the department. It- was ,jjkcided to defer action until & later date. The department wrote stating ihitft/funds for the present financial year v/fere extremely limited, and that only mosfcurgent applications could be considered- The board was requested to submit i:» order of urgency five or jgjx cases where grants were required before March 31 nexj;. This course was adopted, and a committiee was set up to select the. schools. A memorandum from the department stated that no Saturday instruction classes for probationers and: uncertificated teachers would bo approved next year, but that applications for the establishment: of a " refresher" course of instrurtion for adult teachers and a short course for probationers and uncertificated teaphers would be .considered. The boayd was authorised' to accept tha lowest tender for the erection of adds-, tional outbuildings at the Onehunga iin-' fant school provided tihe whole cost wasv contributed from the Iboa.rd rebuilding fund. A grajit was authorised by the department for the acquisition of access to the Ponsonby* infant school site from .Tale Street, i Notification, of the appointment of voluntary welfare .officers in- connection with special classes for backward children was made in a lottos* from the department. It was stated thalt Mrs, Rfe# had been appointed in the .ease of the Myers special classes. The Te Kuiti School Committee notified a proposal to miss local contributions for the installing of a new heating ay .stem, to cost £550, in the school building and asked to what extent the bodrd was prepared to grant assistance, ft was decided not to make a grant as there were not sufficient funds for the purpose.
