RURAL ADVERTISING.
OBJECTION TO HOARDINGS. "RUINING BEAUTY OF COUNTRY." [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COKRIISPONDENT. ] DUNEDIN, Wednesday. Rural advertising on. hoardings was condemn?' 1 by the president of the Otago Motor . Club, Mr. A. E. Ansell, at the club's meeting this week, on the ground that it was ruining the beauties of the countryside. The South Island Motor Union views the hoardings with displeasure, and a list is to be prepared of the firms which intend to fall in with the union's wishes and abolish the signs, and those who prefer to act against the wishes of the union. The Main Highways Board had asked for the union's opinion on the application from a firm for the erection of lighthouses on country roads, a provision being made that advertising should be allowed, said Mr. Ansell. The union had been very decided and would not tolerate the lighthouses. The union felt that if the privilege were granted to one firm, others would follow. It was further considered that the motor associations were doing the work of road-guiding so thoroughly that there was no necessity for outside assistance. The matter of rural advertising had been brought up, and the union had decided to co-operate with the North Island . associations in introducing legislation to end this objectionable advertising. The union had expressed its displeasure of the manner in which motor tyre and petrol firms were spoiling the beauty of the country.' Mr. Wright: What about the whisky advertisements ?, Mr. Ansell: Motorists don't use whisky They use petrol. If Mr. AVright ]ike> to boycott the bodies erecting signs he might be doing good. The union intended to compile the replies of the motor firms to the representations, concluded Mr.' Ansell.
