WAITOMO CAVES.
CRITICISM OF LIGHTING. Vigorous criticism of the manner in which the electric lighting of the Waitomo Caves had been carried out was expressed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Tourist League last evening. One speaker stated that the, Government had paid no attention to the league's representations that masked lights should be used. Even the Tourist Department's officers had not been consulted, but the job had been handed over to the Public Works Department. "As a result," he said, "in the midst of the natural wonders a big fat electric light bulb hits you in the eye." Mr. P. Hay ward remarked that indirect lighting should have been used.. Members also complained that no iattempt had been made to keep out. of sight the numerous switches or the lead-covered electric wires. A resolution .was tarried expressing regret at the manner in which the lighting had been carried out and urging that it should be made to harmonise with the artistic qualities of the caves.
