TARIFF REVISION.
QUESTION OF ; A REDUCTION. CHAMBER of commerce inquiry The attitude of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce in advocating a substantial reduction in the tariff was objected to by representatives of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association on the council of the chamber at a meeting yesterday. Mr. G. Finn said he felt the chamber had lost a little prestige as the result of its remit, advocating reduction, being lost at the chambers of commerce conference at Wellington. It was a matter of surprise to him that 17 representatives of chambers of commerce were found to support the remit. As a representative of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association he thought the chamber should fully investigate the whole question. Mr. J. A. C. Allura said ■ the matter was one of serious moment to manufacturers, and they took strong exception to the remarks of the chamber regarding the matter. He thought Mr. Finn's suggestion was a reasonable one. He urged the chamber to reserve its judgment until a committee had made exhaustive investigation.' "After all it is only the truth we want, and I think the suggestion of setting up a committee an excellent one," stated Mr. H. T. Merritt. After further discussion a committee was set up to confer , with other bodies in investigating the question of tariff reduction. The composition of the commission set up by the Government to report on the question of tariff revision was also discussed. Members stated that its personnel did not represent the whole of the community and it was decided to ask that the farming and commercial interests be represented. "VIEWPOINT OP FARMERS. DESIRE FOR REPRESENTATION. A number of resolutions bearing on the proposed tariff revision were passed by the Auckland Provincial Executive of the Farrners' t Union last evening. The view was expressed that as the farmers were more directly concerned with the effects of tariffs than other sections of the ■ community, they should have representation on the committee taking evidence on the subject. A resolution to that effect was carried. Objection was also.made to a committee comprised solely of departmental officers dealing with the tariff question, which embraced matters of policy.
