FIRST PORT OF GALL.
A SOUTHERN COMPLAINT. AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] "WELLINGTON, Tuesday. "Auckland is getting the thick end o! the stick all the time," declared Mr. 6. Mitchell at a meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to-night, when the question of the first, port of call for overseas steamers was touched upon. Mr. Mitchell stated that, a large proportion of vessels were making Auckland the first port of call, while Wellington was shifting more tonnage than the northern city. It seemed, he added, that New Zealand would be better served if the bigger percentage of the vessels called at Wellington firSt. It was stated'by the secretary that the question as to steamers' itineraries could only be dealt with at the port of shipment where loading programmes were arranged. The chairman, Mr. J. R. Simpson, stated that nothing could be done in the matter until a reply had been received from the board in London.
