LABOUR PROBLEMS.
DISPUTES IN AUSTRALIA. THE WATERSIDE DIFFICULTY. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Dec. 13. The dispute at the State Electricity Commission's works at Yallourn is not yet settled. Unless it ends next week the metropolitan area will suffer a short-, age of electric current, which will result in muoh unemployment and distress. It is understood that preliminary negotiations have begun with a view to effecting a settlement of the no-overtime strike by members of the Watersiders' Federation. Suggestions have been formulated for submission to the owners, and the view is expressed that there is every likelihood of these being accepted. Arrangements will probably be made to-day for a conference of the parties. The suggestion made is that the owners should tentatively agree to overtime rates pending the Arbitration Court finally determining tho claims of the federation for payment at rate and ahalf between 8 p.m. and midnight and double time between midnight and 8 a.m.
