WRITTEN TEST AND ABILITY. "MATRICULATION" A MAGIG TERM [BY' TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Friday. " I believe that if the word ' matriculation ' were abolished in New Zealand it would be a good thing," said Professor Lawson, chairman of the Primary Schools Syllabus Revision Committee in the course of his remarks upon the work of the committee. "It is a magic term now and has a talasmanic value in family life. Jimmy Smith passed the matriculation examination and that spurred on Johnny Jones next door to do likewise.
"Ever since : education had been transferred to books a mistake had been made by giving it an academic twist. Too much reliance was placed upon the written word instead of upon the initiative of the teacher and the pupil. If oomething could bo done to remedy that condition and induce among the public a conception of ability as being something very much wider than could posibly be represented by the passing of any university examkiation it would do some good." Professor Lawson's remarks upon the subject were warmly applauded.
