RACEHORSES BOLT.
FRIGHTENED BY ENGINE. INCIDENT AT WINGATUI, [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUNEDIN, Friday Three thoroughbred horses in training at Wingatui came near to an end one day recently. They were out for a walk on the roads when, on the incline leading to the Otago Central railway crossing, an engine that was being shunted emitted a shrill whistle, whereupon the horses bolted, jumped a wire fence, and galloped into the rough gully. If they had been killed or permanently lamed, as seemed likely, the money loss would have been' something considerable, for they were Mr. Fisher's three racers. Bonnie Winkie, leader in the flight, was cut about the stifles, and lamed, and as a result he is to be finally retired from racing. Comic Song escaped with superficial cuts about the hocks, and is supposed to have come through without serious injury. Trembroney, the two-year-old that has not yet raced was practically unhurt.
