KING'S SCHOOL.
AN OUTDOOR CEREMONY, REVIEW OF THE YEAR'S WORK* IMPORTANCE OF GOOD SPEECH* The annual prize-giving of Kind's School, 'R Dinners, held yesterday after, noon, was attended by a, large number ot parents and friends. Tho delightful weather made an outdoor function possible and chairs were placed on the lav.n in the shade of the largo trees. In reviewing the work of the year, tho principal, Mr. S. Clifton Smith, said 164 boys had been enrolled, of whom 44 were boarders.. Next year 55 boys would be passed on to King's College, making a v total of 146 boys passed on to the college since the inception of the school. Beferring to the work of the past five years during his term of office, Mr. Clifton Smith said the curriculum seemed to attain the object aimed at, namely, a reasonable* entrance standard at King's College. Tho English work was good, tho speech and utterance of the boys being particularly pleasing. Carelessness of enunciation was never overlooked, i no matter what subject tho master had in hand at the moment. They felt that if they could encourage in the pupils a feeling of pride in their speech they would have achieved much. Arithmetic Test-booh? ; "I cannot express the same satisfaction with arithmetic," Mr. Clifton Smith said. "This is practically the only subject in which we find ourselves running parallel with the State schools, and consequently we use the State school textbooks. These books are. bad and lam pleased to learn that the Education Department contemplates the> early substitution of something better/' Professor R, M. Algie, chairman of the board of governors, said the fine enunciation reflect,ed the greatest credit on th» boys and their tutors. Nothing wag bettor than a true conception of tha value and majesty ox the English language. '
Brief- reference to the &ood work bsing done at tho school was made by Cs«c.a H. K. .Archdall, headmaster of King's College. He said he felt the boys were being well trained afc the school and looked forward to having them at the college.
Several .songs sung by the pupils were enthusiastically received. Tho number* comprised "The First Noel," "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," "'Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "See ■ Our Oars with Feathered Spray" and tho National Anthem.
