WATERSIDE DISPUTE.
POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. NEGOTIATIONS PROCEEDING. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Dec. 4. The Waterside Workers' Federation is now making efforts to effect agreements with the different shipping companies by direct negotiation. Already agreements have been reached with two of the smaller companies, which the federation claims to be on its own terms. Heavy losses are being sustained both by shipowners and shippers owing to the strike. Delays in the sailings of steamers from various Australian ports are frequent. Some vessels are four days behind their schedule. Several coastal steamers are laid up and their crews have been paid of!.
