SHE TAUMARUNUI MEETING FIVE FAVOURITES SCORE. I MISS vera' wins the cup. Tke Taumarunui Raping Club's meeting "was held at Manunui on Saturday and passed off very successfully. Tho weather ■was fine and there was a good attendance. -■ The track wa-i in good order and the racing' very interesting. Tho Taumarunui Cup was won by Miss Vera, who led from encl to end and scored nicely. After the race the silvei cup was presented to Mr. L. J. Hyde, owner of Miss Vera, by the president, Mr. Vf. H. Wackrow. Five favourites were successful and thero were no big dividends. Speculation was brisk and the totalisator handled £13,493, compared with £11,815 last year, an increase of £1683. Abbess was a good, favourite over Macroom for the Trial Plate, and she justified the confidence placed in her by winning decisively. . Bracken Abbey began quickest and -was the early leader from Macroom, Abbey Queen, Always and 'Abbess. Nearing the turn Abbess ran to the front and drew out to win by a length and a half from Macroom, who defeated Bracken Abbey by two lengths. Always was fourth, followed by Master Mind, Tea Leal and Bright Comet. Abbess should win again in the near future. Joy Germ was the popular choice for the Taringamotu Handicap, with Cantab a good second fancy.. The favourite began well, and led to the turn with Green Bonnet, Branson and Cantab in close attendance. Then Bransen came through to win easily by a length and a-half from Cantab with Joy Germ half a length away third. Topping was fourth, followed by Rena i&langu and Green Bonnet. The Cup Contest, 'fhe Taumarunui Cup only attracted five runners, and Spoony was a firm favourite, nearly twice as well backed as the second choice, Miss Vera. As soon as the barrier lifted Miss Vera and Forest Gold rushed to "he front and they led past the stand sis lengths clear of Ngarara, who was just ahead of Spoony and Passionate. The leaders increased the lead to eight lengths along the back, but this was re duced crossing the top Miss Vera turned for home just ahead of Forest Gold, Passionate, Spoony and Ngarara, who were bunched. In the run to the post Miss Vera did best and won by a length and a-half frQm Passionate, who defeated Spoony by a length. Ngarara was a moderate fourth and Forest Gold last. Backers gave most support to Day Guide, a gelding from F. Tutchen's . stable, who was having his first race in the Matapuna Hack Handicap, Atapai and Green Bonnet also being well fancied. The favourite failed to begin smartly and was never prominent. Gold Clip, Atapai, and Macroom were the leaders 'when the field settled down, with Master Mind and Bracken Abbey handy. Master Mind lost his position nearing the turn, where Gold ("lip, Atapai and Macroom were just in front of Abbey Day and Bracken Abbey. Once ,in line for. honio Abbey Day shot to the front, but Bracken Abbey finished well and won by half a length, while the fastfinishing Green Bonnet got up to deadheat Tor second with Abbey Day. Gold Clip was fourth, and then came Macroom, Master Mind, Atapai and Velma Day. Green Bonnet did not begin well, Otherwise she may have won. Favourite Wins Hurdles. Gold Rep was a slightly better favourite than Ngahinepouri for the Manunui Hurdles, with the others at fair prices. Scot Free and Glencairn made the pace merry, and five furlongs f rorn home they were out five lengths from Gold Rep, who was clear of Waiau Lad , and Tres Bon. - Nearing the turn Gold Rep closed on the leaders, and she stayed on to win by three-parts of a length from Glencairn, who. defeated Scot Free by a length. Waiau Lad was a poor fourth and Tres Bon fifth. AdventJell at the third fence and badly interfered with Ngahinepouri. Branson, who had won earlier in the day, was made an odds-on favourite for tho Matiere Hack Handicap, and he won without causing his backers any uneasiness. Cantab and Branson were soon in front and were first into the straight from Always. Once in line for the post Branson drew out to win by a length from Always, who finished fairly well and beat Cantab by three-parts of a length. Rina Mangu , was . fourth, followed by Bright Comet, with Lady Spalpeen last. Branson is a four-year-old • gelding by Greyspear from Garstan and is a solidly-built customer, who should .win more races in minor company.Only four started for the Rangaroa Flying Handicap. Te Koroke was a good favourite, with Day Guard and Miss Egypt also solidly backed. Miss Egypt found her feet quickest and made play from Te Koroke, with the other pair handy. Rounding the the turn Day -Guard went through on the rails and had his head in front of Miss Egypt and I Te Koroke at the straight entrance, with •Pa,ssionato also well up. A good race to . .tliß post saw Te Koroke win by a neck from Miss Egypt,' with Day Guard half a length away third, and Passionate last. For the Owhango Hack Handicap, Ngarara was a firm favourite, with Lightwood a good second choice. Lightwood made the running Lady Cintra,. Ngarara and Day Lass. Ngarara took charge crossing the top and went on to win easily by a length and a-half from Day Lass, who defeated Niblick by two and a-half lengths. Lady Cintra was a moderate fourth, followed by Lightwood and Glen Mareo. f DETAILS OF THE RACING. . , TRIAL PLATE. 01 ! £75; second £lO, third £5. Weight 8.0. 6 fur. I~ABBESS. L. J. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, Glentruin has returned home from Feilding looking none the worse for the travelling and racing. It appears that she was exceptionally unlucky at the start of the Feilding Stakes, losing seven or eight lengths, and T. H. Gillett gives her credit far running a fine race under the circumstances. The imported mare will not visit Auckland this month. If she goes on all right during the next fortnight, however, she will be sent to Awapuni for one race—the Palmerston North Stakes. Though Money Order will not be required to do any racing during the holidays, he is being kept going in easy exercise, chiefly on the roads. He cannot' bo described as sound, but T.'H. Gillett is hopeful that he will go on all right now, in which case he may be ready for a race at one of the early autumn meetings. Sunny Loch was schooled over a couple of hurdles this week, and shaped creditably. Unfortunately one of his legs has filled slightly. There is a fear that the ligament is affected, but in the meantime J. McCombe is hopeful that it is. nothing bo serious. A. E. Worm aid has Frivolous in work again. She has made a good recovery from the mishap that necessitated a short retirement, Deucalion has rejoined D. Campbell's j team after a spell and he will be got ready for another racing campaign. The Demosi thenes gelding is on the down grade, and leg troubles are an additional handicap, but he may pick up another stake at the back end of the season. Radiac is out of commission at present, consequent on a minor mishap, but it is hoped that he will soon be able to resume work. D. Campbell has taken TiS and Firestick in hand, and is working them regularly. They are an unsound pair, but if they go on right they will wm races, as they have the gift of galloping. Marsiiam, the two-year-old brother to Battlement (by Martian from Polymnia), has been gelded, and he will be given a good spell before being got ready to race as a three-year-old. A. McAulay has Sir Roy and Sagitarius looking in good order at present. They are getting through useful tasks in view of oliday racing, which will probably be done at the Otago and the Southland meetings. Sir George Clifford will probably race a team, including Centrepiece and Front Rank at the Dunedin meeting. Scrip i 3 shaping well in her training and she may be seen to advantage in sprint race 3 during the holidays *** Cornstalk ia at present having a spell, and it is unlikely that he will resume work until the autumn. Throughout his career he has shown great promise in his track work, but he has consistently failed to reproduce his best in a race. Kilbox, Assurance, and Master Clarence will be nominated for the Manawatu Rac- \ ing Club's meeting. They will be raced at the South Canterbury meeting next week, and on their form will /depend whether or not they fulfil their Awapuni engagements.
