NEWMARKET SCHOOL.

I SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL, IMPROVEMENT OF THE GROUNDS. A-happy time was spent by parents and friends of childma attending the Newmarket school at a carnival in the school grounds on Saturday afternoon, Over 500 children attended and it is estimated there was an equal number of adults. The proceeds were in aid of the school improvement fund and over £7O was realised. The fete was opened by *Mr. H. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, who congratulated the school on its effort and said h® hoped the pupils would have every success in their worthy endeavour. Although' much had already been done in the way of improvement to the grounds a good deal of work yet remained. It wa«s pleasing to see the scholars took a real pride in the appearance of their school. Mr. T. J. Watt, chairman of the School Committee, thanked the teachers and pupils for their efforts. Besides a number of produce and sweets stalls a well-arranged programme of entertainment was provided. A grand ifancy dress parade was given by the small folk, who appeared in a wide array of novel and colourful dresses. The senior girlsi appeared in an exhibition of Swedish drill and dancing steps, and over 100 girls took part in a spectacular flag drill display. Misses Gwen Gribble and Jean Hunter gave a Highland dance and a sailor's hornpipe. A special boys' drill squad performed phvsical exercises and an Irish jig was danced by Miss Nesta King, A basketball match between the iCornwall Park and Newmarket school girls resulted in a win for Newmarket by 32 to 6. A programme of music was played by the Ponsonby Boys' Brass Band. Great interest was taken by the visitors in a display of the pupils' work arranged in the new school. Several exhibits of writing and drawing attracted attention and the display of woodwork was favourably commented upon.
