BUYING FROM AMERICA.

Sir, —Someone said that facts were stranger than fiction, and "C.H.N." displays at least one example of this. He,' an ardent freetrader, is concerned over the loss of custom revenue and indirectly asks us to buy from America because "where will the revenue lost in customs come from if we don't?" "C.H.N." had better try and hide his face, for he will yet be losing caste among that very small bodv of believers if excuses are not offered, fee has at least one friend in "N.G," for from Timaru comes the news of another who wants to warn us to avoid British trade. "C.H.N." has always been anxious to stimulate foreign tra'de, and he again talks of that "important" trade Britain does with America. It really amounts to a very small percentage of the whole and represents only what America cannot get elsewhere or make herself, so its importance is of small degree and only impresses men such as "C.H.N." and our friend at Timaru. It is a whole heap of pity that there still are a few men who cannot—or should I say, will not—see the utter necessity of trading within the Empire and mainly with Britain, the, only real buyer of our produce. Britain's present position is reflected out here, and so long as Britain's purchasing power is low ab long will hard times hit tin here. Too many motor-cars, too many pictures, ami too much timber comes from America, and if they refuse our goods why cannot we, too, show . a suffer lip and* put up the sign. "Not wanted here" to America The richest (I believe the only) creditor nation in the world is not the one we should buy from if we must go outside, but rather to the debtor nations of the earth. An effort is being made among some to establish a league, "Buy Within the Empire," and I wish it the very best of luck. J. H. Be ale.
